I have been a shooter for many years, but handed back my firearms license when handguns were banned.
Over recent years i have been getting back into shooting, mostly i have been using air rifles, but as i get permission to shoot on larger land, it has been getting more difficult with a low power rifle.
In November i decided that i would apply for a Firearms Licence again so that i could get a proper hunting rifle, my main concern about applying was that since the last time i had a license i am now an insulin controlled diabetic and the UK has some of the strictest firearms laws in the world.
The police are now required to contact your doctor to see if there is any reason that the applicant should be refused a license, and its fact that many diabetics suffer from some form of depression at some point and depression is a big no-no. Fortunatly i have not at any point suffered from depression. Another factor is hypo's, i didnt know if they would consider the risk of a hypo being to great to allow ownership of a firearm.
I am pleased to say that only 10 weeks after application my firearms license was granted, and i am now free to consider what rifle i would like to buy
if any diabetics are considering applying for an FAC, feel free to contact me if you have any questions
OK been a little quiet here for a while, not done masses of shooting due to a bad wrist, for which i am getting tratment!
i have been doing target shooting at a local club, and am even in some of the local competitions, and have been doing quite well even though i have been using other people rifles!
the big probelm with using other peoples rifles is that you can really go adjusting the sights to suite yourself, and i have not really found a rifle at the club where the sights are right for me..
with this in mind its 1 week since i appled for my FAC, i have had a letter back from the police confirming they have my application, and stating someone will be intouch soon
i thought i would push my luck and ask for 3 rifles and 1500 rounds of ammunition
now just have to wait and see what happens
but in the mean time i have decided i want a Ruger 10/22, and i wand to fit a Kidd 2 stage trigger, and a few other bits.... i can see my wallet taking a hammering!
Saturday night i went shooting for the first time since the early december.
There was many reason for not going sooner, but one big reason was that i started on insulin at the beginning of december, this was followed by a cold, then by a sickness bug... Then the weather was terrible..
Anyway finally got to choose a night, them comes the other thoughts and what ifs.. how would going out hunting effect my glucose levels, should i take a meter, do i have glucose tablets..
The good news is that the night went ok, i managed to get my first 2 rabbits of the year and my health didn't suffer
i did however get some bad news, the people that own the land i shoot on have put it up for sale, this means that i may lose the permission to shoot there!
So i really have to start looking hard for new shooting permissions this year
Its been a few months now since i have been shooting, its that time of year again when i should really get the guns out clean and check them and consider using them.
The sun is starting to show itself, and im sure the bunnies will be showing themselves.
This year i really need to work on getting more land, which is easier said than done, but i could do with 3 -4 more permissions which would allow me to go shoot 2 -3 time a week.
Barry has had a fox bothering him for a few weeks now, only a young cub, probably only recently left his mother
